The National Treasury has proposed a new transaction fees for eCitizen that could make Kenyans pay more for accessing public services. The fee charges could double from the current amount.
The proposed charges under the Finance Bill 2026, under public finance management (eCitizen system management), outline the new pricing in which Kenyans who use the it will pay Ksh 100for the high value services.
If approved, services costing more than Ksh 100,000 will be charged Ksh 100; those paying between Ksh 10,000 and Ksh 99,999 will be charged Ksh 70; those paying Ksh 500 and Ksh 9,999 will pay Ksh 50; while the those making payment between Ksh 100 and Ksh 499 will be charged Ksh 5and services below Ksh 99 will be free.
Millions of people who rely on eCitizen for services such as driving license renewals, business registration, NTSA, passport applications, birth and death certificates will be affected by the changes.
eCitizen is used for accessing government services which also promotes transparency and provides other government agencies like Kenya Revenue, Immigration Department and Huduma Services. It
The proposal is aims to introduce adequate public participation, display official announcements and commercial advertisement.
The government has stated the services under eCitizen have improved efficiency and reduced delays that slowed down access to public services.
