The U.S. Embassy Nairobi made a powerful statement about the future of African storytelling this week, hosting an exclusive screening and showcase event under the banner of Story Labs: Staging Change — Strong Voices for Safe Spaces, a flagship initiative developed in partnership with American Spaces Kenya and Sahihi Sessions.

The event, held under the Freedom 250 celebration, brought together Kenya’s most promising emerging filmmakers alongside diplomats, creative industry leaders, and media personalities to celebrate a new chapter in US-Kenya cultural collaboration.

The showcase featured original short films crafted entirely by Kenyan talent, with American software deployed at every stage of pre-production, production, and post-production — a tangible demonstration of how shared technology and shared values can produce world-class creative output.

Five standout films anchored the evening: Echoes, a visually ambitious science-fiction short produced by Sahihi Africa and American Spaces, with the tagline “Vulnerability Is Not Weakness”; Ruin Theory: Smile for Me, a psychological short by Ian Mumo Mule produced under the Zaraya banner; and Good Citizen, a film by Richard Gikuni co-produced by Sahihi Africa and American Spaces.

Also featured was Helter Skelter, a short by Dennis Kimaita written by Helga Muinde and each film pushed creative boundaries, addressing themes that resonate deeply on both sides of the Atlantic.

Industry Voices Amplify the Moment

Among the invited guests was Anto Neosoul, one of Kenya’s most recognised multi-hyphenate creatives, whose career spans acting, television hosting, radio, and music industry management.

Known to audiences from his roles in MTV Shuga and Siri, and as a respected TV host on Teen Republik and The Trend, as well as a broadcasting voice on Nation FM, Anto brings a rare depth of screen experience to his current role as a leading PR and marketing executive representing artists through Platoon, UMG Kenya, and Mavin Records.

“What the U.S. Embassy is doing here goes beyond cultural diplomacy — it is building a creative ecosystem,” said Anto Neosoul. “Having worked both in front of and behind the camera, I understand how important access to professional tools, mentorship, and credible platforms is for emerging filmmakers.

Story Labs is providing exactly that. These films are not only ready for Kenyan audiences, but for the global stage as well.”

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

The event was hosted by Drew Giblin, Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy Nairobi, whose office has championed Story Labs as part of a broader commitment to empowering African creatives through access to American expertise and technology.

The screening was held under the iconic Freedom 250 backdrop, underscoring the deep ties between the United States and Kenya as partners in culture, innovation, and shared democratic values.

The Story Labs model — pairing Kenya’s cinematic talent with American storytelling frameworks and technology — represents a blueprint for how international partnerships can move creative industries from the margins to the mainstream.

With films like Echoes demonstrating production quality that rivals international standards, the initiative signals that Nairobi is not just a market to export stories to — it is a source of stories the world needs to hear.

Looking Ahead

As the East African screen industry continues its rapid evolution, partnerships like Story Labs serve as critical accelerators.

For Anto Neosoul, whose career has long bridged entertainment and industry, the event reinforced a conviction that the next generation of Kenyan filmmakers does not need to wait for permission from the mainstream — they need platforms, skills, and allies willing to invest in their vision.

The U.S. Embassy Nairobi, through Story Labs, is proving to be exactly that.
