More than 50 of the protestors who were arrested during the demonstrations against fuel prices rise on Tuesday in Nairobi and Machakos have been brought to the City Court and Machakos Law Court respectively where they have been charged with unlawful assembly and obstruction of movement among other offenses.

In Nairobi, 12 protestors who were arrested trying to stage a demonstration within the CBD were brought before the Trial Magistrate Rhoda Yator at the City Court on Wednesday.

Ten of the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges of blocking free movement of persons and causing inconvenience to the public.

However, two accused refused to plead after their lawyer told the court that they are minors and their age needs to be ascertained before the case continues.

The court instructed that the accused persons be released on a cash bail of Ksh3,000 each awaiting their case hearing.

In Machakos County, 43 protestors who were arrested during the protests were brought before Chief Magistrate James Oburah who ordered to remain in police custody until Monday April 27 when the case will be heard further.

The Defence Attorney led by Jackson Kala argued that the court should take into consideration that out of the total 23 arrested are students from higher learning institutions.
