Students and parents across the country have been left in shock after the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) revoked the licence of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and ordered all its campuses closed.

In a notice released on Monday from Nairobi, TVETA said the institution had been offering courses and issuing certificates without proper approval.

The body indicated that KIM could only provide its courses if they had been scrutinized by the TVET Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council. Nevertheless, they went on to introduce new courses that were never authorized.

TVETA also identified an issue where some of the trainers who were teaching were using fake licenses contrary to the requirement by law.

Consequently, the regulator has decided that all the certificates that would be provided by KIM from that time would be rendered invalid. That means the certificate holders can no longer use them for employment or further learning.

“Any certificates or diplomas obtained from the institution beyond 2018 are not recognised,” TVETA said in part of the notice.

The decision will affect several learners who were admitted to the institution’s various campuses in different parts of the country. They are at loss about what to do following their investment in their learning programs.

TVETA has recommended that such affected learners to contact the regulatory body for any assistance they might require and seek admission in other institutions which are recognized by the regulatory body and get assistance in completing their studies.

On the other hand, TVETA is warning the general public to be more careful while selecting learning institutions to enroll into. It recommended Kenyans to always check whether the institute is registered or not.

Now the ball is in the court of education sector to come up with appropriate recommendations in order to sort out students stuck in the matter.
