Illegal Brew

The government has named Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western as the areas most hit by illegal alcohol in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said a recent crackdown led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) saw officers recover and destroy about 2.8 million litres of illicit brew.

From the figures shared, Rift Valley had the highest amount at about 800,000 litres. Nyanza followed with 690,000 litres, while Western recorded around 600,000 litres.

The ministry noted that some of the counties in these regions are notorious for manufacture and distribution of the illicit drinks. The counties include Kisii, Kakamega, Nakuru and West Pokot Counties whose recent operations have yielded huge seizures of the illicit brew.

Another large number of 309,000 litres of illicit alcohol was also destroyed in Nairobi County.

While other regions such as Central, Coast and Eastern, have lower quantities, the ministry attributed this trend to ongoing crackdowns and improved licensing process in those regions.

North Eastern recorded very few cases.

This was done because the government declared that the move was in line with its broader approach towards addressing the problem of drug abuse in the country.

Since then, there have been many raids and searches across the nation by various security organizations against those responsible for making and distributing these drugs.
