The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has raised an alarm over the content of material being watched and played by young children in the country as schools closed for the April holiday.
The organization has issued a public notice expressing concern that young children in the country may view the content during the upcoming holiday.
KFCB has since warned video show operators, PlayStation gaming centers, and film exhibitors against allowing young children access to content rated for adults.
It has been said that young children should only have access to content rated for general viewing.
The organization has also called on parents and guardians in the country to keep a watchful eye on the content being watched by young children at home.
Parents have been encouraged to keep a watchful eye on young children at home and set limits on the amount of time spent watching screens, and also to watch content together with young children in the country. According to KFCB, this will help parents talk to young children about the content they are watching.
KFCB is also calling on members of the public to inform them of any content they think is not suitable for children so that they can be assessed and classified appropriately.
The board is reminding parents to always know where their children are, especially during the holiday season because they have more free time.
KFCB, through its Parents’ Digital Literacy Programme (PADIL), is working towards ensuring that parents are able to comprehend the digital world better and how best they can safeguard their children.
The board explained that the safety of children from harmful content is a responsibility shared by parents, entertainment providers, and regulators.
