Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has confirmed he is safe after a road accident involving his security vehicle in the Otonglo area near the Molasses Plant along the Kisumu–Busia Road.

The crash occurred on Sunday, March 8, as the CS’s team travelled to Kisumu International Airport after attending a thanksgiving ceremony for Health Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga in Rarieda, Siaya county. The collision reportedly involved multiple vehicles, including a public service matatu and a tuk-tuk.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, emergency responders quickly coordinated rescue efforts, evacuating more than 19 injured people to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for urgent treatment. Two people died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.

In a statement, the hospital later clarified that the deceased were two adult men and one woman. Among those receiving treatment at the facility are three young children aged three, six and seven.

Duale said the government will support the victims and confirmed that treatment costs will be covered.

“On our way to Kisumu International Airport, we had a small accident, so all patients belong to me. To my team, let us help the patients in all the hospitals and make sure they are recovering very well,” he said.

The hospital also confirmed that all medical expenses for the victims will be fully covered by the Ministry of Health, with the facility providing treatment free of charge as the injured continue receiving care.
