President William Ruto has strongly defended his recent political engagement with opposition leader Raila Odinga, dismissing criticism that the move is a betrayal of Kenya’s founding principles.

Speaking during an Easter Sunday service in Ntulele, Narok County, Ruto addressed growing public debate surrounding his unexpected deal with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader. The new alliance has stirred controversy, with critics questioning its implications for democracy, opposition oversight, and the ideals on which the Kenya Kwanza administration was elected.

Ruto took particular issue with The Standard newspaper, which ran a provocative front-page headline comparing the Ruto-Raila deal to Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus—a move that has sparked outrage among his supporters.“You can see today we are seated here—Azimio and Kenya Kwanza governments.

The unity we are pushing in Kenya is divine and God-ordained. That is how we can be blessed as a nation—if we are united,” the President said, emphasizing that political unity is key to national progress.

Although he did not mention The Standard by name, Ruto condemned unnamed media outlets for framing national unity as treachery. “Those telling us through newspapers that unity is betrayal,” he said, “are misrepresenting our intentions.”

The Standard Group, known for its bold editorial style, has often taken a critical stance on major political developments. Its recent coverage has intensified public discourse on the nature and timing of the handshake between two of Kenya’s most prominent political rivals.

Ruto’s comments suggest a firm commitment to fostering political stability and inclusivity. However, they also highlight ongoing tensions between the executive and sections of the media, as well as concerns among voters about the transparency and purpose of such high-level political deals.

As the political landscape continues to shift, observers will be watching closely to see how this alliance reshapes party dynamics and governance ahead of the next general election.
