Health-Worker Training

The Health and Education ministries of Kenya agreed to collaborate in the effort to transform the way health workers are trained across the country. This comes after a meeting between the two ministries at the highest level, where Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba participated.

After the meeting, the two ministries agreed to establish a task force that would take an overall look at all the current health worker training programs offered in various colleges and universities across the country.

The task force would also develop a step-by-step plan that would guide the implementation of the reforms that would ensure health workers are able to offer quality services to the citizens of Kenya as provided for in the Constitution.

The two ministries said that the training of health workers who can offer quality health services is important if the country is to achieve the provisions of the Constitution. The meeting also involved discussions on the health reforms that are currently going on across the country under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program. This includes the plan for the development of a Digital Superhighway that would link health facilities using digital technology and also eliminate the practice of unqualified health practitioners.

The two ministries said that the government recognizes the importance of the human resources that are the backbone of the health sector of the country. The lack of well-trained doctors, nurses, and other health practitioners makes the best health plans impossible to implement.

This comes at a time when the government is implementing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda that seeks to improve the quality of health services across the country.

The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretaries Mary Muthoni and Beatrice Muganda, Health Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth, among other officials.
