President William Ruto on Thursday talked to beneficiaries of the NYOTA start-up capital programme from Nyamira, Migori and Kisii counties during an event at Kisii County.

At the meeting, the Head of State said that the transformation of Kisii County will be through real development projects.

He highlighted some major investments the government has made in the county. He said that Sh33 billion has been allocated to building affordable housing, modern markets, and hostels.

Ruto mentioned that upgrading roads will be funded with Sh7 billion, and over Sh400 million has gone into the modernisation of Suneka Airport to facilitate better connectivity and thereby enhance economic growth.

The Head of State further revealed that a plan is underway to refurbish and extend Gusii Stadium to meet international standards, stating that the stadium will be a great tool for talent development and sports opportunities for the local youth.

During the visit, President Ruto held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Nyambera Modern Market construction worth Sh350 million. The market is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Once the market is up and running, it will be able to house over 1, 000 traders, thus, giving small businesses and local trade in Kisii a significant lift.

The youth and small, scale entrepreneurs targeted NYOTA program, is a venture of capital and skills development, and the beneficiaries will thus be able to create employment and run sustainable businesses.

President Ruto emphasized that the government will always be ready to facilitate such initiatives which are part of the larger plans to drive economic growth and lower unemployment in the country.
