Doctors in Nandi County are soon expected to receive the much-awaited promotion and job security after the success of negotiations between the county government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

The breakthrough was revealed on Friday by the KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah during a consultative meeting which took place on Thursday evening. The meeting was organized by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang. The forum was composed of top county authority members including the Deputy Governor, County Secretary, and Chief Officers of Health and Finance.

The union was represented by its national and branch officials, headed by Dr. Atellah, an indication of the gravity of issues surrounding doctors in the county.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, head of the association, Dr. Atellah, described the encounter as constructive and results-oriented. According to him, some of the bases of the discussions included matters of promotions, contracts, and postgraduate training.

Concerning promotions, the county government made a firm and unequivocal commitment to promote all doctors whose names have been formallysubmitted by KMPDU. This, according to the union, will take effect as of March salaries.

Four doctors will have to move posts from Job Group R to Group S, eight others from Job Group N/P to Group Q, and three promotions from Job Group M to N.

Regarding doctors who were working on contract, the county government committed to issuing appointment letters to the 14 doctors who were affected. Furthermore, the county would engage them on a gradual and progressive basis until they were fully absorbed.

“The county agreed to issue appointment letters to all 14 doctors currently under its contractual terms. Moreover, the county agreed to cater to the gradual absorption of all doctors influenced by the restructuring process on Permanent and Pensionable terms until full absorption,” stated Dr. Atellah.

The negotiations also involved postgraduate training, which has long been a worry for most doctors in the counties, and the trade union has noted two doctors have been released for postgraduate training as of January 2026, with more set to follow in the next fiscal year.

Dr. Atellah stated that the promises were a great achievement for medical practitioners in the province of Nandi and reflected the power of negotiations and coming together as a profession.

“This result represents a major step in the constant progress of the union’s ongoing fight for equality, dignity, and justice for physicians,” he said. “In our unswerving commitment to equality, leave no physician behind, one county at a time. And our unity remains our greatest strength.” This move is expected to raise the morale of health practitioners in Nandi County as well as health service delivery in the region.
