Family members, friends and political leaders on Saturday gathered at CITAM, Valley Road, for a memorial service in honour of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, as funeral preparations continue ahead of his burial.
The service, which began at around 10 a.m., marked part of a four-day funeral programme leading to his burial scheduled for Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at his rural home in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.
Among leaders present were former Attorney General Amos Wako and Martha Karua, who joined family members and friends in paying tribute to the veteran politician.
Following the church service, an overnight vigil was held at Jirongo’s family residence in Gigiri, Nairobi. Additional memorial services are expected to take place in Kitale on Sunday, December 28, before his body is transported to Lumakanda on Monday ahead of the burial.
Jirongo died in a tragic road accident on December 13, 2025, after his Mercedes-Benz vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coaches passenger bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, Naivasha.
Police said the crash occurred at about 3 a.m., and a post-mortem examination conducted at Lee Funeral Home revealed that the former MP died from severe blunt force trauma, including critical injuries to the chest, abdomen and spine, as well as multiple fractures.
Pathologists described the injuries as “not compatible with life.”
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is continuing with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Detectives have traced and questioned individuals linked to a white Toyota Probox captured on CCTV near the scene shortly before the crash.
Investigators are also analysing CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station, which captured Jirongo’s vehicle shortly before the accident, as they attempt to reconstruct his final movements.
The family has urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, noting that Jirongo was expected to be at his Gigiri residence earlier that night. They have appealed for full disclosure of findings to establish how he ended up on the Naivasha stretch of the highway.
Political leaders across the country have continued to pay tribute to the late legislator.
President William Ruto described Jirongo as a “relentless go-getter whose life was defined by determination and service to the nation.”
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who visited the family in Lumakanda, urged leaders to refrain from politicising the tragedy and allow the family to mourn in peace.
