Leaders from the Coast region are encouraging eligible citizens, especially the youths, to take the opportunity of the current voter registration process to empower the political bargaining position of the region ahead of the General Election scheduled for the year 2027.
The call was made as the group of over 1,000 youths jogged a distance of 10 kilometres at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa. The activity was utilized as a platform to create awareness on the need to register to vote, coexist peacefully, and be responsible citizens.
As the 2027 General Election approaches, politicians are ramping up campaigns to win the support of as many voters as possible in a move to gain more mileage in the Brazilian political arena. Coast leaders believe there will be increased vocalness of the voice of the region if more citizens turn up to vote.
Businessman Abubakar Joho challenged the youths to register as voters and vote for leaders who would represent their region’s interests. In addition, he urged the youths to shy away from substance and drug abuse, as it is highly important for the region to have an empowered and disciplined youth vote.
Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki also echoed the appeal, asking people to embrace unity and coexistence irrespective of ethnicity and community affiliation. The senator emphasized the need for communities living in the Coast region to live in peace for the sake of political and economic stability.
As per the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Mombasa County had 641,913 eligible voters in the 2022 General Election, which was the highest in the Coast region. There seems to be immense potential in raising the statistics, especially among first-time voters, to be eligible for the next general elections in 2027, according to local leaders.
