The Judiciary has expanded its digital transformation program in Murang’a County with an eye on decongesting prisons and improving access to justice.

This program came about after the donation of computers and laptops to Maranjau Prison in order to facilitate virtual court sessions that will enable cases to be heard without the physical presence of the accused.

While officiating the ceremony, Lady Justice Cecilia Githua, the Presiding Judge of Murang’a High Court, highlighted that the move will lead to timely justice which is in short supply due to the backlogs that have characterized the system over time.

“The Judiciary is determined to utilize technology as a tool to give way to justice that is efficient, just, and without any kind of delay,” Justice Githua expressed.

In line with the program, Maranjau Prison released 106 inmates as part of the ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities and enhance access to justice.

The Judiciary’s digital transformation program in the courts is at the core of the government’s agenda to restructure the Kenyan justice system and make it accessible to the poor and marginalized law-abiding citizens living in remote ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌areas.
