The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has released the names of more than 3,000 candidates who have been shortlisted for the next stage of recruitment into various officer and technical roles, in a significant milestone in this year’s nationwide recruitment drive.
In a Friday, October 24, press release, the military invited shortlisted candidates for interview and selection exercises to report on different dates and places in November and December.
Cadet Recruitment: KDF Future Leaders
General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets Regular: 861 candidates have been invited to report to the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), Lanet, Nakuru, on Monday, December 1, at 8 a.m.
These cadets are trained to become career military officers, and they provide leadership in the Army, Air Force, and Navy. They undergo a demanding three-year military and academic training at KMA and graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Military and Security Studies from Kenyatta University.
The GSO Cadets (Graduate) batch, consisting of 706 degree holders, will report earlier on Monday, November 24 to the same academy for interviews. Unlike their regular counterparts, graduate cadets undergo a shorter, nine-month leadership training since they are already university graduates.
Their educational background typically earns them administrative, technical, or operational roles in the forces.
Specialist Officers: The Professionals Behind the Uniform
KDF also announced that 493 professionals have been shortlisted for the position of Specialist Officers, whose interviews will be held on Monday, December 8, at KMA.
These officers bring expertise from various professions medicine, law, engineering, IT, aviation, and even religious service to support the military’s specialist departments.
They are doctors, pharmacists, nurses, pilots, engineers, lawyers, cybersecurity experts, chaplains, and imams.
Before deployment, specialist officers are taken through basic military orientation to equip them with military discipline and culture in order for them to adapt their civilian skills to a defence environment.
Tradesmen and Women: The Hands that Keep KDF Running
A further 1,310 candidates have also been shortlisted for Tradesmen and Women. They will be interviewed on Monday, November 3, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata, Nairobi.
These vacancies cover a wide range of technical and vocational trades from mechanics, drivers, and electricians to cooks, tailors, welders, and communication technicians. While their work may go unnoticed, it is vital to the day-to-day conduct of KDF operations.
Tradespeople will, if selected, undergo basic training at the Kenya Defence Forces Training School in Eldoret, with specialist training in their selected trades to follow.
Interview Details and Candidate Guidance
The shortlisted candidates have all been notified to present the original national ID, academic and professional certificates, curriculum vitae, and four copies of the same.
KDF will provide food and accommodation during the period of interview, and unsuccessful candidates will receive travel reimbursement in line with military tradition.
Candidates have also been requested to carry warm clothing as the interview venues particularly Nakuru and Eldoret get chilly in December.
This shortlist follows KDF’s recent nationwide recruitment exercise in which thousands of applications were received from across the country.
The exercise aims to enhance Kenya’s defence readiness while offering a chance to young Kenyans to serve the nation in uniform.
