The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has dismissed a letter circulating online that Governor Mutahi Kahiga was summoned for making comments about the late Raila Odinga.
The commission confirmed that the notice was false, signifying that it did not send the governor any summons.
The letter, complete with NCIC’s logo and signature of chairperson Samuel Kobia, charged Governor Kahiga with having been invited to answer to the making of inflammatory remarks against the hate speech and ethnic contempt law.
It even stated the date and location where Kahiga was supposed to show up NCIC offices at Britam Towers in Nairobi further adding to the confusion.
But NCIC was swift to quench the notice as untrue and urged the public to ignore it.
The doctored letter came hours after Governor Kahiga publicly apologized to late Raila Odinga’s family following the governor’s earlier comments, which had gone viral on social media.
Responding to the press on Wednesday morning, the Nyeri Governor clarified that his comments had been taken out of context and did not intend any harm.
“I would like to sincerely apologize to our mourning nation, to Mama Ida Odinga, her family, the ODM fraternity, the Luo Nation, and Kenyans in general,” Kahiga said.
He also announced that he was resigning from being the vice chairperson of the Council of Governors, saying that his remarks were not the views of the Mount Kenya region or UDA.
