Senate staff have been encouraged to take up sporting activities as a way of staying physically fit and boosting productivity at the workplace.
Speaking on Friday during the official launch of the Senate Staff Sports Day at Ulinzi Sports Complex, Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye, CBS, urged staff to adopt the values of sports in their daily duties to enhance performance.
“Sports has so many benefits. It is good for mental health, physical health and it generally keeps away some illnesses,” said Mr. Nyegenye. He added that the virtues displayed in sports — including teamwork, resilience, discipline, and the ability to accept both victory and defeat — are equally vital in the workplace.
Mr. Nyegenye commended the Senate Wellness Committee for organising this year’s event and encouraged them to aim even higher in future editions.
The opening ceremony was graced by celebrated guests, volleyball star Mercy Moim, OGW, and legendary athlete Ezekiel Kemboi, OGW.
Ms. Moim urged Senate staff to embrace sports, noting that it provides an effective outlet for managing stress, while Mr. Kemboi encouraged participants to prioritise their health through regular physical activity.
The annual Senate Staff Sports Day brings together employees from across the institution, who are divided into three teams — White, Gold and Blue — to compete in football, athletics, volleyball, tug of war, netball, badminton, table tennis, chess, darts, scrabble, basketball and pool. Winners are awarded trophies at the close of the event.
