The doctors’ strike in Kiambu County has entered its 107th day, crippling health services across public hospitals and leaving thousands of patients with no option but to seek treatment in private facilities.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), together with civil society group Bunge Mashinani Kiambaa branch, has accused the county leadership of neglecting the crisis and failing to engage medics in meaningful dialogue.
On Wednesday, Bunge Mashinani launched a citizens’ petition demanding the intervention of the national government to end the stalemate.
The group, working alongside KMPDU, is pushing for urgent talks with county officials to resolve grievances that include delayed salaries, poor working conditions, and what they describe as the county’s unwillingness to address the doctors’ plight.
“The prolonged strike has left patients suffering while county leaders remain silent. We are calling on the national government to step in and restore services,” said a representative from the lobby group.
The health workers’ strike, now in its fourth month, continues to paralyze service delivery, piling pressure on families who must now dig deeper into their pockets to seek medical attention in private hospitals.
