Speaking to journalists after being released on Thursday, July 10, MP Mukunji Gitonga said his arrest would not silence him or stop him from speaking out for his constituents.

“I want to thank the people of Embu and those who stood with me. We will not relent in defending the rights of our people,” said Mukunji.

The MP was arrested on Monday in Kiambu County’s Mang’u area and initially taken into custody at Kibii Police Station before DCI officers transferred him.

While the police have made no formal charges, his arrest is reported to be related to recent antigovernment protests during the Saba Saba protests.

The MP was freed on Tuesday on a cash bail of KSh 300,000 or a Ksh1 million surety bond after Kahawa Law Courts turned down an application by the police for him and his co-accused to be held in custody for another 14 days

In court, Mukunji claimed his arrest was an effort to intimidate leaders who speak against the government.

"I will not be silenced by threats, but the violence and vandalism we've witnessed must cease. We must protect lives and property," he insisted.

His arrest triggered protests in Embu, where residents demanded his release. His political allies from the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP party have since come to his support, with some already hinting he is rallying up more political clout as the elections draw near in 2027.

In the afternoon, MP met with Manyatta Constituency experts to discuss possibilities of working together, which would enable local development projects
