Businessman and political figure Philip Nahashon Aroko has been released from custody and will now testify as a state witness in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Aroko was initially arrested and treated as a suspect in the case.

However, after a fresh review of evidence, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) decided to drop him as a suspect and enlist his cooperation as a witness instead.

His release is a major development in the case, which has already seen three people charged in connection with the MP’s killing.

A while ago, Aroko was at the center of the investigation. In late May, the High Court overturned a decision by the JKIA Magistrate’s Court that had granted him bail.

The judge sided with the prosecution, which argued for extended detention, citing the sensitive and complex nature of the case.

Aroko has consistently denied any role in the MP’s murder.

His testimony is now expected to play a key role as the case moves forward.
