Michelle Obama has publicly expressed her full support for her daughter Malia’s decision to no longer use the family surname in her creative work. Instead, Malia, 26, now goes by her first and middle names, “Malia Ann,” a move aimed at carving out her own identity away from the public weight of the Obama legacy.

The former First Lady shared that both Malia and her younger sister Sasha, 23, are determined to make their mark independently and avoid being defined solely by their parents’ prominence. Michelle described this step as a normal part of adulthood, especially for those growing up under public scrutiny.

Malia’s name change became widely noticed when she premiered her short film The Heart at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Credited as “Malia Ann,” she impressed audiences with a thoughtful exploration of grief and human connection, revealing her talent as a filmmaker with a unique voice.

Both Michelle and Barack Obama have acknowledged that their daughters are highly aware of the privilege and visibility that come with their last name. They have consistently encouraged Malia and Sasha to build careers through hard work and authenticity, rather than family influence.

Barack reportedly advised Malia that removing the Obama name may not fully shield her from public recognition, but he respected her desire to let her work stand on its own. He noted that both daughters are committed to earning opportunities on merit, not by association.

Malia has already begun proving her dedication to her craft. She has served as a staff writer on the Amazon Prime series Swarm and recently directed a Nike campaign featuring WNBA star A’ja Wilson. Her path reflects a conscious and courageous effort to succeed through personal talent and effort, something her parents deeply admire.
