Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya and Kakamega Governor H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa held a high-level meeting to review and accelerate the completion of the Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital, a flagship Level 6 facility aimed at transforming healthcare delivery in Western Kenya.
The meeting follows a directive by President Dr. William Ruto, who tasked the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to collaborate with the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs) and the County Government of Kakamega to fast-track the hospital’s construction and commissioning.
Once complete, the ultra-modern facility will serve as a critical health services hub, significantly boosting specialized medical care and referral capacity in the region. It is a key component of the Government’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda under the BETA Plan, which prioritizes equitable and accessible healthcare for all Kenyans.
The Kakamega Level 6 Hospital is among several strategic projects being implemented by the MOD under a multi-agency infrastructure development approach spearheaded by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The meeting was convened by Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, and emphasized the importance of intergovernmental collaboration in delivering impactful development projects across the country.
