In keeping with President William Ruto’s efforts to improve sugarcane farmers’ earnings, the government has announced an increase in cane prices from KSh 5,300 to KSh 5,500 per tonne.

The directive made by the Ministry of Agriculture is effective from May 26, with all 15 licensed millers asked to adhere to the new minimum price and pay the farmers on time.

Agriculture PS Kipronoh Ronoh said the adjustment was necessitated by the need to compensate sugarcane farmers fairly.

“Based on the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices over the past three Months (February 2025, April 2025), the price of cane has been increased from the current Sh5,300.00 per tonne to Sh5,500.00 per tonne, effective 26th May 2025,” read a statement from Rono.

The government assured farmers that it will monitor compliance with the new prices closely.
