The funeral service of His Holiness Pope Francis will be held on Saturday, April 26, the Vatican has announced.

The funeral will take place from 10am (08:00 GMT) at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

The announcement was made on Tuesday shortly after cardinals began a meeting to prepare for the pontiff’s funeral after his death on Monday, aged 88.

The cardinals also agreed that the pope’s body will be taken to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday morning for public viewing.

Pope Francis is currently lying out in a coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his 12-year papacy.

World leaders are expected to attend the ceremony, and it is not clear if President William Ruto, who is in China on a five-day state visit, will attend.
