Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir has defended the proposal by the Adani Group to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In a statement on Wednesday, Chirchir insisted that it was time for Kenya to have a new airport, adding that modernising JKIA will attract more visitors, boosting tourism and investment.
"We do all agree that we need a new airport, we need a new investment. When visitors arrive, during the El Nino, you all appreciate how the whole place was leaking. We need the kind of airports we see in developed economies to be able to create the kind of opportunities by attracting more visitors to our country," said Chirchir while addressing striking airport workers.
However, Chirchir said the government was yet to sign any deal with Adani and the Indian firm’s KSh 260 billion proposal to upgrade JKIA was still under consideration.
Chirchir insisted that the government will conduct public participation before any deal is signed.
