Police in Kamagambo have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and recovered 401 rolls of bhang worth over Sh1 million in a public service vehicle (PSV) heading to Kisumu.

The arrest was made after members of the public tipped off authorities about the suspicious vehicle, registration number KDM 981Z, which was traveling from Migori. Acting swiftly, officers set up an ambush and intercepted the vehicle, leading to a thorough search.

Inside, they discovered two bags containing 34.4 kilograms of bhang, concealed among passengers’ luggage. The driver, identified as Calvin Okoth Otieno, was found ferrying only students, possibly hoping their presence would divert attention from his illegal cargo. However, his tactics failed as law enforcement officers acted on the intelligence provided.

Okoth was immediately taken into custody at Kamagambo Police Station and is currently undergoing processing ahead of his court appearance.

Authorities have lauded the public for their vigilance and urged more citizens to report illegal activities anonymously via the  #FichuaKwaDCI hotline at 0800 722 203.

“We encourage the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities. Together, we can combat drug trafficking and keep our communities safe,” a police spokesperson stated.

Investigations into the source and intended recipients of the seized narcotics are ongoing.
