Lee Kinyanjui, the nominee for the position of Investments, Trade, and Industry Cabinet Secretary, was reported to be worth Sh471 million, according to a National Assembly committee. During his appearance before the Committee on Appointments, chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Kinyanjui disclosed that his shares in family businesses were valued at approximately Sh399 million. He also stated that he owns an apartment valued at Sh8 million and holds a loan of Sh8 million.
Speaker Wetang’ula commented that, considering Kinyanjui’s background as a former governor, this wealth was “very modest.”
In his closing remarks, Kinyanjui expressed his commitment to serving the country to the best of his ability if approved for the role. He emphasized that opportunities like this are rare and assured the committee that he would not shy away from challenges. He mentioned that more challenges would offer greater opportunities to bring about positive change.
Kinyanjui also highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration with Parliament, stating that he had previously worked closely with many MPs and would continue to do so if appointed. He vowed to work tirelessly for the benefit of Kenya.
Regarding his past criticisms of the Kenya Kwanza administration, Kinyanjui clarified that his remarks were aimed at policies, not the government itself. He described his critique as “positive criticism,” specifically citing concerns over pending bills affecting business cash flows.
Kinyanjui also shared that he had resigned from the Ubuntu People’s Forum immediately after being nominated for the ministerial position. He explained that although he had left the party, he remained connected to its philosophy of “I am because you are.”
Previously, Kinyanjui had contested the Nakuru governor seat under the Jubilee Party but lost to Susan Kihika of UDA. Following his loss, he founded the Ubuntu People’s Forum political party.
