Authorities are warning holidaymakers to stay vigilant during the festive season, as unscrupulous traders exploit the demand for alcohol by selling illicit and potentially harmful drinks.
Despite ongoing efforts to intercept prohibited alcohol and traditional brews, uncustomed goods remain in circulation.
These include substandard products that pose a risk to consumers.
In a recent operation, detectives in Teso South, Busia County, raided a homestead in Ochude, uncovering over three tonnes of suspected ethanol packed in 111 jerrycans, each with a 30-litre capacity.
The raid, carried out at dawn, revealed 58 jerrycans hidden in a room, while 53 were loaded onto an Isuzu D-Max vehicle ready for distribution.
The operation, conducted jointly by detectives, KRA officials, and officers from Adungosi Police Station, resulted in the arrest of five suspects: Isaiah Keta (27), Patrick Limo (25), Chrispinus Ilukol (30), Kelvin Ochuka (32), and Isaac Omoit (19).
Authorities seized the vehicle, registration number KCY 332F, and secured 3,330 litres of ethanol as evidence.
The home’s owner, along with other suspects who fled the scene, is being pursued.
Law enforcement agencies are urging the public to exercise caution and report suspicious activities to prevent the circulation of harmful goods during the holiday season.
