The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has dropped murder charges against eight senior police officers in connection with the killings of Baby Samantha Pendo and 39 protesters during the 2017 post-election demonstrations in Kisumu.
In the announcement made on Monday, May 5, the DPP said there was insufficient evidence to charge the eight with murder.
However, the DPP approved murder and rape charges against four police officers, namely John Chengo Masha, Lina Kogey, Cyprine Robi Wankio, and James Rono.
In individual charges, senior police officer Masha faces charges of murder, rape, and crimes against humanity under the International Crimes Act.
The officer is accused of failing to prevent his juniors from storming civilian homes, where they allegedly beat residents with clubs, raped more than 20 women, and subjected them to other forms of abuse.
Lina, on the other hand, is facing murder charges as she failed to prevent the crimes committed by her fellow officers.
