The government has reported a largely peaceful environment across the country following today’s demonstrations, with no widespread cases of looting, vandalism, violent clashes, or injuries recorded.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the peaceful conduct of the protests demonstrated the importance of holding demonstrations within the framework of the Constitution, adding that such actions help guarantee peace and security.

“Today is proof that when demonstrations are conducted in accordance with the provisions of our Constitution, peace and security are guaranteed,” Murkomen said during an update on the state of security in the country.

The CS noted that processions held in Nairobi and Mombasa involved families and friends of victims of past protests alongside members of the public, while most towns across the country continued with normal business operations.

However, security agencies arrested 355 people linked to alleged criminal activities during the demonstrations. Nairobi recorded the highest number of arrests at 161, followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36.

Other arrests were reported in Murang’a (12), Bungoma (9), Meru (6), Laikipia (5), and Machakos (3). No arrests were reported in the North Eastern, Nyanza, and Coast regions.
According to Murkomen, those arrested will face various charges, including robbery, vandalism, road obstruction, and attempted stealing.

The CS said security agencies had acted on intelligence reports indicating that some individuals were being transported from other parts of the country to Nairobi with intentions of disrupting peace. Security screening was consequently mounted on major highways entering the capital to prevent possible unrest.

Murkomen acknowledged that the measures caused some inconvenience but said they were necessary to protect businesses and maintain security.

Meanwhile, Assistant Chief of Kariti Sub-Location in Murang’a County, Anthony Gathungu, was injured after being attacked by individuals attempting to erect a barricade in Kandara. He was treated at Kagunduini Health Centre and discharged in stable condition.

The CS commended security officers for maintaining order and praised journalists and media houses for responsible reporting during the demonstrations.
