The Ministry of Health has confirmed 153 cases of cholera reported across Migori, Kisumu, and Nairobi counties as concerns grow over the spread of the disease amid ongoing heavy rains.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said Migori County has recorded 53 cases, Kisumu 56 cases, and Nairobi 44 cases. She warned that the situation demands urgent public health interventions to prevent further spread within the affected counties and neighboring regions.

Speaking in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County after attending a church service, Muthoni urged members of the public to prioritize personal hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing, boiling drinking water, clearing bushes, and proper use of pit latrines.

“Open defecation must be avoided at all costs, especially now that we are experiencing widespread flooding due to the ongoing rains,” she emphasized.

The Ministry has ramped up efforts to contain the outbreak, with public health teams deployed to the affected counties to raise awareness and coordinate response activities.

The Health Ministry is calling for vigilance and cooperation from the public to help curb the spread of the disease.
