The recent public participation process across Kenya’s 290 constituencies has revealed significant public support for the Special Motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to the data, released by Parliament a total of 224,907 submissions were received regarding the motion.

Out of the total responses, 146,429 individuals, accounting for 65.11%, expressed support for the Deputy President’s removal from office.

Meanwhile, 76,026 participants, or 33.80%, opposed the motion. An additional 2,452 responses, representing 1.09%, fell into other categories or did not explicitly support or oppose the motion.

The public participation process was initiated as part of efforts to gauge national sentiment on the issue as the country awaits further political developments.

This comes at a time that the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is to have his day before the National Assembly today, in an unprecedented move, to defend himself against the impeachment motion by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

The motion, officially notified to the members by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Tuesday last week, lays 11 grounds, which according to the mover, Mr Mutuse, make DP Gachagua’s continued stay in office untenable.

For the House to impeach the DP, it requires just one of the 11 grounds to be substantiated.
