A 50-year-old woman was rushed to hospital after being accidentally shot in the leg at her residence in Riara Apartments off Ngong Road on Sunday morning.
The woman, wife of a businessman and licensed firearm holder, was injured when a loaded Beretta pistol inside one of three bags discharged unexpectedly.
The husband told police he had just returned home and asked his wife to help carry the bags into the house. Unaware that one bag contained a loaded firearm with 15 bullets, she placed the bags on the ground in the parking lot.
Police reports indicate that the firearm discharged after the bag was placed down with force. The bullet hit a wall and ricocheted, striking the woman in the right leg.
“The safety catch on the pistol was found to be open, which likely caused the accidental firing,” said a police officer involved in the investigation.
The woman was immediately taken to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Officers have seized the firearm as evidence and continue to investigate the incident. They also visited both the hospital and the scene as part of the probe.
