The Webuye Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Bungoma County is complete and awaiting commissioning, marking progress in the government’s implementation of flagship projects under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the first phase of BETA flagship projects was rapidly approaching completion, with several facilities already contributing to economic activity across the country.
Omollo said the progress achieved in barely four years would provide a foundation for the next phase of the government’s development plan, which is expected to support broader national transformation and contribute to the Kenya Beyond Vision 2030 aspiration.
Implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the Webuye market will accommodate more than 200 traders and replace informal roadside trading with a safer and more organised commercial environment.
The single-storey facility includes cold storage units for fresh produce, modern sanitation amenities, lactation rooms, an ICT hub and office space for SACCOs.
Omollo said the facility would strengthen local enterprise, improve incomes, minimise post-harvest losses and promote financial and digital inclusion.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also involved in coordinating and supporting the project’s delivery, security and integration into local development needs.
