A storm of outrage has swept through the political landscape today as leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) moved to condemn the circumstances that led to the death of influencer Albert Omondi.
The law makers distanced themselves from the killing Albert Omondi Ojuang, who died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.
Led by Seme MP James Nyikal and Suba counterpart Millie Odhiambo, leaders demanded swift justice and calling on President William Ruto to crack down on rogue elements within his administration.
Millie Odhiambo was particularly vocal in distancing ODM from any perception of complicity, following online criticism citing the party’s support for president Ruto’s broad-based government.
“Our party’s memorandum of understanding does not include collaboration on human rights violations,” she stated. “We cannot and will not compromise on our values.”
Ojuang, a social media influencer was arrested in Homa Bay County on June 7, 2025, and mysteriously died the next morning at the Central Police Station cell in Nairobi.
The leaders said that the death has sparked renewed concerns over police brutality, unlawful detention, and intolerance toward dissenting voices, particularly those expressed online.
“This is not just about Albert Ojuang, this is about the culture of impunity and the creeping erosion of our constitutional rights. No one should be arrested, let alone killed, for expressing an opinion,” said Millie Odhiambo. “
The ODM leaders unequivocally condemned the killing, with Odhiambo calling it a “red line” moment for the nation. They demanded immediate investigations, prosecutions, and reforms within the security apparatus.
“Why was this young man transported all the way from Homa Bay to Nairobi? Are there no police stations or courts in Homa Bay capable of handling a social media-related case?” asked Nyikal.
The legislators demanded that President Ruto take decisive action against state officials responsible for abuses.
“If the President truly abhors these violations, as he told me personally, then let him crack the whip,” said Nyikal.
The Seme MP warned against sanitizing state violence with what she called “ridiculous theories.”
