Actress Lucy Wangui

For decades, Vioja Mahakamani has been Kenya’s most watched television show, blending humor with courtroom drama. Vioja Mahakamani actress Lucy Wangui, who plays the role of a judge, revealed how she prepared her role by immersing herself in Kenya’s laws to ensure her performance was realistic.

Speaking in an interview, Wangui stated she did not want her portrayal to be a parody detached from reality; instead, she sought to ground her character in the actual workings of Kenyan law.

I used to go to the High Court library. I was permitted to go and read the Grey Book and the Penal Code,” Wangui said.

She further stated she could research on the type of case featured in the programme.

“For things like stealing, I knew the law by heart. But if it was something that I had not dealt with, I would go and research,” she added.

Her dedication allowed her to embody the authority and gravitas expected of a judge, while still delivering the comedic timing that makes Vioja Mahakamani so entertaining.

The actress also revealed her courtroom persona was influenced by her personality away from the cameras and when growing up in a family of seven children, felt the responsibility of protecting people.
