The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has said it will hold fresh grassroots elections in 42 counties next month, following moves by the ruling party to address some of the disputes that were left unresolved during their earlier internal elections.
UDA grassroots elections to be conducted in phases
In a statement released on Wednesday, January 21, UDA stated that the UDA grassroots elections will be conducted in phases, with the second phase set to take place on March 7 and the third phase on March 28.
UDA, however, did not provide details regarding the affected counties and the reasons behind the repeat registration exercise. Party members who are interested in vying for various positions have been advised to register through the party’s official website.
The decision was arrived at after a party top officials meeting held on Wednesday and attended by Secretary General Hassan Omar, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa, and National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire.
UDA also announced that it will hold a Special National Governing Council (NGC) meeting on Monday, January 26, 2026, at State House, Nairobi. The meeting will be attended by all elected and nominated leaders of UDA, and it will be presided over by President William Ruto, who is the party leader.
As part of the early preparations for the 2027 General Election, the party announced that it will establish a UDA Aspirants Forum to coordinate and engage members who are vying for elective positions. The online registration platform for the aspirants is set to open by the end of the day, with the first aspirants’ forum meeting scheduled for February 4, 2026.
This is just a week after the UDA organized grassroots elections in the counties of Samburu, Nyeri, Laikipia, and Baringo. This was conducted on January 11 and only involved delegates from polling centers, considering past complaints and concerns raised during party elections.
Although the party claims that the repeat polls are intended to simplify the grassroots structures, the ambiguity surrounding the affected counties and the rationale for the repeat polls is expected to create new questions within the party as the 2027 election gradually takes shape.
