South African singer Tyla has released her dates for the upcoming tour, removing Nigeria from the list of destinations.
On her website she mentioned at least 34 cities, including Lagos, Johannesburg and Cape Town, where she will be performing, but later she removed Lagos from the list due to the recent anti-migrant sentiment in South Africa, which led her to cancel her concert.
Relations between Nigeria and South Africa soured recently over allegations that Nigerians have been the target of xenophobic violence.
The anti-migrant sentiment has caused tens of thousands of foreigners to leave the country, including Nigerians, who boarded chartered repatriation flights.
According to Tyla, Lagos was initially the only Nigerian stop on Tyla’s A-Pop World tour, scheduled for December 22, 2026, while the other countries, such as Europe, North America and South Africa remain unchanged.
The cancellation follows the widespread calls to boycott from Nigerians, who argued that the South African artist should not perform in Nigeria while the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians continue in South Africa.
Comedian Trevor Noah also faces backlash following an advert he fronted for the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, as Tyla faces the same backlash from Nigerians.
