Police in Busia have arrested two suspects after intercepting a vehicle loaded with tonnes of uncustomed sugar transported into Kenya through an ungazetted border route.
The suspects, identified as Abdi Ahmed, 31, and Said Mustafa, 24, were arrested after officers from Busia Police Station flagged down their Toyota Probox, registration number KDJ 561V, in the Velasco area within Busia Township.

Police authorities claim the sugar was apparently smuggled into the country through an un,manned entry point along the border of Kenya, Uganda and dodged the usual customs clearance procedures.
The vehicle and the suger recovered were taken to the Busia Police Station and booked as exhibits. The two suspects also remain in police cells awaiting investigations by the police before their appearance in court.
The seizure occurred as police stepped up patrols along boundary routes, which are believed to be used by traffickers to avoid paying tariffs and smuggle items improperly.
