Farmers in Laikipia County and Baringo County have started receiving support in a new tree planting drive aimed at improving food production and protecting the environment.
The exercise is being carried out by the Agriculture and Food Authority through its Food Crops Directorate, following a directive from President William Ruto to increase tree growing across the country.
This week, the police went from farm to farm, planting trees within two counties. It is meant to be part of measures helping farmers cope with environmental changes, including unreliable weather and poor soils, in order to boost food production.
The importance of trees cannot be overstated especially when it comes to agricultural practices, according to experts. This is because having these plants around will help improve the soil through nutrient provision, help preserve the soil, and retain water in the soil.
In addition to improving the soil, the trees are important when it comes to improving the climatic condition surrounding the farm products.
The initiative is a joint effort between the Kenya Forest Service, farmers, and community members who are being called upon to ensure trees are well taken care of as a normal farming activity.
Based on the statements made by authorities, the incorporation of trees in agricultural activities will definitely lead to the development of sustainable environments and enhance productivity.
It is vital to note that there are ongoing efforts being made to promote tree planting in an attempt to ensure food security in light of global warming.
This initiative will start benefiting areas such as Laikipia and Baringo due to their unpredictable rains and drought periods.
