The government has welcomed fresh investment in petroleum transport safety following the deployment of a new fleet of modern and fully compliant fuel tankers by TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya and its transport partners.

Speaking during the unveiling of the fleet, Energy Principal Secretary Kello Harsama said the milestone reflects the success of ongoing collaboration between the government, industry players and transporters aimed at improving safety standards across the petroleum supply chain.

According to the PS, reforms in the petroleum transport sector, including the review of the Cost of Supply and Operations of Petroleum Products (COSSOP) and recognition of compliant transport costs by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), have created incentives for investment in safer and more efficient equipment.

“This achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished when Government, industry players, and transporters work together towards a common goal,” said Harsama.

He commended TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya and its partners for investing in modern transport infrastructure, noting that the move will enhance road safety, improve regulatory compliance and strengthen the reliability of fuel distribution across the country.

The PS emphasized that safe transportation of petroleum products remains a national priority due to its direct impact on public safety, environmental protection and energy security.

“Safe petroleum transportation is not just an industry requirement—it is a national responsibility. It helps protect lives, safeguard the environment, and ensure the uninterrupted energy supply that powers our economy,” he said.

Harsama also lauded efforts to improve driver competence through training initiatives such as the Perfect Driver Program, noting that modern equipment can only achieve maximum impact when operated by skilled and responsible personnel.

The government has pledged to continue working with stakeholders to raise standards within the energy sector as part of broader efforts to build a safer, more efficient and sustainable petroleum transport system.
