Spotify has officially rolled out a new system to identify and manage AI-generated artists, marking a significant step in how the streaming giant handles artificial intelligence in music.
The move comes amid growing debate over authenticity, creativity and the role of AI in the global music industry.
Spotify announced the introduction of an AI Persona badge that will appear on artist profiles, search results and track listings. The badge will signal to listeners that an artist’s identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person.
Artist profiles that self-disclose as AI Personas will also start applying badge to relevant profiles.
Spotify stated that artists can share their profiles represented as an AI Personas through Spotify for Artists, hoping artists will be transparent, giving them opportunity to disclose and not rely on self-disclosure alone.
It also stated in the future, listeners will have the ability to report artist profiles that show AI Personas to the review teams. It has already removed tens of millions of spam tracks created using generative AI tools and they aim to balance between innovations and protect listeners from low-quality mass produced content.
The move is to cool the tension in the music industry where AI is creating endless content, but people are craving authenticity and the new rules will ensure that listeners are not misled about who or what they are listening to.
