Kenyan businesswoman and socialite Amber Ray has publicly endorsed the government’s Cybercrime Amendment Bill, describing it as a step in the right direction towards restoring decency and responsibility into the world wide web.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Amber Ray explained that her support for the Bill is not due to “blind loyalty,” but due to “deep contemplation and personal belief.” She acknowledged the growing power of social media but asked Kenyans to use it wisely.
In a time when the internet has been our second home, where words travel faster than movement, it’s more important than ever to remember that freedom of speech should never be employed as an excuse for cruelty, defamation, or disrespect,” she blogged.
The twice-over mother went on to share that the internet is now a dirty place, with some people using words as weapons to destroy lives and reputations.
“We’ve seen it too many times good people torn down, families broken, lives lost. not by weapons, but by words,” Amber added, emphasizing that “behind every profile is a real human being with emotions, dignity, and a story.”
Her statement comes amid heated national discussions surrounding the Cybercrime Amendment Bill, which aims to regulate online behaviour and curb digital harassment, misinformation, and defamation.
