The Senate County Public Accounts Committee has criticized the stalled construction of 64 Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, citing incompetence and sluggish progress by the contractor.

Led by Vice Chairperson Johnes Mwaruma, the Committee expressed concern that despite the project consuming Ksh 750 million of its Ksh 1.1 billion budget, less than 50 percent of the work has been completed.

Mwaruma, who also serves as Senator for Taita Taveta County, urged the county government to renegotiate a return-to-work formula with the contractor to resume progress on the long-delayed project, which he described as an “eyesore.”

The senators condemned the quality of workmanship, describing it as “shoddy,” and raised doubts over the feasibility of completing the project with the remaining funds.

“This is a sports-rich area, and failing to complete such a facility is a major disservice to our athletes. The county claims 70 percent completion, but what we’ve seen is nowhere near half,” said Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.

Proposed design of the stadium.

Other senators on the inspection tour included Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi), and Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo).

Originally funded by the World Bank, the stadium project lost its financier after the lender pulled out, leaving the county to foot the remaining costs.

The 30,000-seater stadium was initially scheduled for completion in 2022, but the contractor has now extended the timeline to December this year.
