The Senate minority leadership has called on the government to promptly reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo and his Deputy Majority Leader, Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, emphasized the urgency of appointing IEBC commissioners to prepare for the 2027 General Election and the necessary boundary delimitation ahead of the polls.
Speaking in Malindi, Wambua defended Parliament, stating that both the Senate and National Assembly were waiting for bills from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), which would pave the way for the constitution of the electoral body.
“The NADCO report outlined a roadmap for appointing IEBC commissioners, but the process has been delayed due to differing opinions on the matter,” Wambua said.
Wambua urged the government to prioritize the appointment of IEBC commissioners.

“The country is courting disaster by not having a properly constituted electoral commission, and the government must act urgently to fill these positions,” he added.
By-elections are already scheduled in three constituencies and at least six county wards, further highlighting the need for an operational electoral body.
Madzayo also called on both the executive and legislature to fast-track the appointment process, expressing optimism that the matter would soon be resolved.
Last week, Dennis Itumbi, head of the Creative Economy and Special Projects in the Office of the President, clarified that a court order was currently hindering the reconstitution process.
He reaffirmed President William Ruto’s commitment to reconstituting the IEBC, which was first expressed as early as March 2023.
