Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has been severely criticized by the Senate Education Committee for neglecting to adequately support Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) in the county over the last 3 years.
On Tuesday at the committee meeting, Governor Badilisha when explaining why the county had not been able to meet learners’ needs despite the allocation of Ksh 12.5 million for ECDE capitation in the current financial year responded slowly.
The senate members blame his administration for parents being left to raise funds for school materials as they see it as the only way of supporting the coming generation.
In response, the governor included fault in the county assembly by saying it did not endorse a key policy that would enable the allocated funds to be spent.
The Committee was also concerned about the county that is hiring clerical officers in place of teachers to teach ECDE, which is going against the law.
According to legislators, Nyandarua has a higher number of clerical officers than fully trained ECDE teachers, a fact that they say is lowering the quality of education of young learners.
The committee is likely to present its position on the issue once they have completed their investigation.
