Safaricom PLC has issued a statement denying any involvement in the arrest of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died in police custody under unclear circumstances.

The death of a social media influencer has sparked public outrage. Through a statement released on Wednesday, June 11, Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa expressed the company’s deep condolences to the family and friends of the late Albert.

He condemned leaders linking Safaricom to the arrest of the late blogger, a threat to information that could lower the telecommunication company’s reputation

“Our attention has been drawn to disturbing news by a section of leaders linking Safaricom to the arrest of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang. At no point was there any contact between Safaricom and any security agency in investigating or arresting the late Ojwang,” said Ndegwa

In the statement, the company was not aware of the arrest of Albert, claimed to get news circulated on social media outlets

Pointing at Hon. Justin Muturi, Ndegwa described the allegations as disturbing and unfounded and urged the public to remain calm and resist attempts at incitement.

Instead, Safaricom called on the country’s leadership to champion a credible, transparent and timely investigation into the incident.

“Our ask to all Kenyans is to ignore any attempts to incite them and remain firm in demanding accountability through transparent investigations”.

Safaricom asks leaders to push for a credible, transparent, and timely investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice and give the family and Kenyans the answers they seek. “We once again send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Albert”.

The tech company reaffirms its commitment and reassures all Kenyans that they will remain safe, secure, and protected in handling their data, and they will continue to do so now and in the future.
