President William Ruto has reiterated his administration’s commitment to long-term agricultural transformation, saying the government is making bold choices that prioritise national prosperity over short-term political gains.
Speaking when he officially opened the 2025 Mombasa International A.S.K. Show in Mombasa County, the Head of State said his government deliberately opted to subsidise production instead of consumption, a move he described as tough but correct.
“We are taking decisive steps that rise above the short-term expediencies of winning the next election, and instead anchor our vision firmly on the long-term prosperity of our nation,” President Ruto said.
He explained that the approach is already bearing fruit through stronger food security, higher farmer incomes, and renewed investor confidence.
The President noted that the government is partnering with the private sector on large-scale irrigation projects in Galana-Kulalu, Bura, and the Tana Delta to further accelerate food production. These initiatives, he said, will focus on maize, rice, sugar, cotton, and other cash crops to firmly position Kenya on a path of sustained agricultural growth.
According to Ruto, the reforms are part of a broader strategy to make agriculture more productive and resilient, ensuring it continues to serve as the backbone of Kenya’s economy and a reliable source of livelihoods for millions of citizens.
