President William Ruto has commissioned the Mwala Cluster Mile Water Supply Project in Machakos County, where the project is intended to improve access to water supplies for residents of the area.

The phase two of the water project was commissioned at a value of 1.47 billion, expected to serve over 130,000 residents across Mwala, Makutano, Masii, Kivandini, Wamunyu, Kathama, Oldonyo Sabuk, Mbiuni, Mbaani, Kilembwa and Kyawango, suppling 6.6 million litres a day.

President Ruto said the government was prioritizing water infrastructure to address shortages in Ukambani, adding that plans were underway to construct two major dams in the region.

“We must be deliberate and intentional in addressing water shortages in Ukambani,” Ruto said.

The project is expected to improve the livelihoods of the local communities by increasing access to clean water for domestic use, supporting public institutions and reducing the challenges residents face in obtaining the essential resource.

He also defended the government’s development agenda, saying residents should not be excluded from public investment because of their region’s political alignment.
