President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to ending the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), saying sustainable peace in the region is key to the stability and prosperity of Africa.
Speaking on Thursday during a Joint Virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), President Ruto said the meeting had taken “decisive steps” to bolster collective peace efforts.
The leaders endorsed the Framework for the Merger of the Nairobi and Luanda Processes, the Terms of Reference for the Panel of Facilitators, and a Process Design for an Inclusive Mediation Process in eastern DRC. They also adopted other enabling instruments to guide and resource the initiative.
“We stand firm in our resolve to end the conflict, halt the tragic loss of lives, prevent further displacement of communities, and protect property and livelihoods from destruction,” Ruto said.
The President stressed that the unified African-led approach will be instrumental in addressing the root causes of instability and ensuring lasting peace in the volatile region.
